Our paediatric occupational therapists who specialise in neuro-disability work with babies, children and young people with a wide range of neurological and physical impairments and disabilities.

These young clients may have an acquired injury or disability, such as a brain or spinal injury or amputation; a condition they have had since they were born, such as cerebral palsy, arthrogryposis, osteo genesis imperfecta or a genetic condition or syndrome; or a progressive condition, such as muscular dystrophy.

We carry detailed and holistic assessments of each young clients’ physical; postural; sensory; functional; communication; environmental; social; educational; and care needs.

The assessment enables us to provide a wide range of recommendations and intervention options aimed at supporting the child’s development, independence, participation, inclusion and enjoyment in all aspects of their life.

We work with children in their home, education and community settings; collaboratively with their families, carers, school staff and wider MDT members from both private and statutory services.

Recommended interventions may include:

  • Therapy sessions to work on maximising the child’s functional abilities and quality of life.

  • Joint assessments with suppliers and other professionals for specialist equipment and technology solutions to support with personal care; seating, mobility and postural care; play and leisure; and communication

  • School and childcare setting visits to ensure consistency across settings

  • School based assessment to inform an EHCP in order to support access to and participation in education

  • Moving and handling risk assessment, plan and training

  • Training for family members, carers and education staff

  • Provision and monitoring of splinting

  • Environmental adaptations

  • Specific hobbies or leisure activities to promote function and increase participation
