What are the 5 Biggest Challenges Facing Occupational Therapists?

1. Always having to explain what we do - There is a widespread misconception about the OT profession. Many people assume its purpose is to help "get people jobs" or it is "the same as physical therapy". It can be frustrating as an OT having to explain what it is we do all the time.

2. Emotionally draining - Occupational Therapists are often dealing with difficult and demanding cases. This means high attention to detail is needed and we struggle to switch off when we get home. We can get close to the clients we work with, so it is incredibly heartbreaking when we lose a client we are supporting and working with.

3. Long-Working Hours- Due to the pressures on statutory services, both financial and staffing it can sometimes lead to being overworked, leaving me feeling exhausted. This is less of a problem with independent practice as you have more control over your workload.

4. Productivity Targets- We have to work to a timeframe, which can be frustrating as I feel I do not get the time I need to support clients in the way I am capable of. This can be disheartening and makes me feel like a rubbish OT.

5. A lot of Paperwork- It feels like a never ending pile of paperwork. We have to write and check all of our reports from our assessments which can be very time consuming.

How can Inclusion help reduce some of these pressures?

Working as an independent OT at inclusion means you can pick the hours you want to work, meaning you can work as much or as little as you like.
We provide admin support meaning there is always someone on hand to help with any difficulties and queries.
We manage your case load, meaning you won't be left with an unmanageable amount of cases.
We offer training opportunities and support our OTs to becoming the best OTs they can be.
