OT Week 2019 - Fred's Story

#OTWeek2019 #SmallChangeBigImpact

OT Week is back this year between 4 - 10 November. This year's focus is #SmallChangeBigImpact which aims to highlight how the role of Occupational Therapists impact clients from even the smallest change to help their physical and mental well being.

To celebrate, Inclusion.me have contributed to RCOT's story wall.

Our OT Caroline Sted-Smith shares her story

The Challenge

Fred had been hoisted for all transfers for almost a year following hospital discharge - his care needs had not been reviewed but he wanted to be able to stand again.

The Change

Fred was assessed using a profiling bed and was able to sit unsupported. A stand aid was trialled and with care staff singing for rhythm and motivation, he achieved a safe sit to stand for long enough for the seat paddles to be put in place.

The Impact

With provision of a stand aid and some motivational singing (not necessarily good singing!) Fred no longer needs to be hoisted and has achieved his goal. Care staff are having fun identifying different tunes that they can all sing along to.
