Want to work with us? Want to become an OT or get back to being an OT after some time out? Get in touch….

Want to work with us? Want to become an Occupational Therapist or get back to being an Occupational Therapist after some time out of the profession? Get in touch with us as we really want to hear from you………

A few exciting new developments for us that we want your feedback on:

1. We are trying to set up an intern opportunity for students wanting to get onto an Occupational Therapy course or returning to work OT’s who have been out of the profession for a while. The idea at the moment is that it will be a part time post designed to fit in around other work or study commitments and will be available on a regular, rolling basis. We are just planning this at the moment and would love your feedback about how we could design things to make them as interesting and beneficial as possible – please get in touch and let us know your thoughts…..

2. We have a new, fully secure client database system designed specifically for our use and which has a very strong Occupational Therapy and case management focus (it’s even got all our forms and stuff on it!!). We all use Macs in the office so it’s set up for them at the moment and is still at Beta testing stage but we hope to be able to tweak it soon enough so it could be used on any Mac or PC. We think it might end up being quite a useful tool to anyone in OT or case management or the private practice / health profession and again would love your feedback about if this is something that might be of interest to you, what you would want it to do for you, etc……you guessed it – please get in touch and let us know your thoughts……..

3. Finally we think there should be more private practicing Occupational Therapists out there…..we obviously want to help more people get interested in working with us, but just as importantly we want to help more people fire up or act upon an interest in getting into private OT work.…….and again we’ve had a few ideas. One option is that we are thinking about offering a regular visit opportunity for OT’s interested in getting into being self employed – a kind of free Q&A session with bells on. Don’t forget there is also the OTIPP take the leap day training day for some extra guidance and help! Another option we are thinking about would be a franchise opportunity where we provide a variety of support / start up package options that would help take out some of the risk and stress of getting set up for yourself – and we share the cost……We want to grow our company all around the country and would love you to become and feel part of it all. You know what’s coming next I’m sure……We are just planning this at the moment and would love your feedback about how we could design things to make these options as interesting, helpful and beneficial as possible to you – so please get in touch and let us know your thoughts…..

I am considering re-training to become an occupational therapist. I am a mature student (26 years old). I think an internship scheme is an excellent idea to attract people to the profession and to support people to return to the profession. But the internship scheme will have to be well organised, with defined learning outcomes, particularly if it is unpaid. The alternative to an internship scheme is volunteering. People will give up their time for free for a voluntary organisation. They may also be forgiving if the organisation is disorganised or the work is not directly relevant. But they will feel exploited if a private company asks them to work for free, and then does not ensure that they are gaining directly relevant experience or learning new skills. I have done internships in the past where I have felt exploited in this way. At the end of one such internship I turned down an invitation to apply for a paid position because I had lost all respect for the company. Beware of a badly managed internship scheme – it can put your company’s reputation at risk!

    Hi Kirsteen,

Thanks for the feedback and we’ll make sure we take all your points onboard and come up with a clear set of learning objectives, outcomes and measures. Really helpful….keep in touch and good luck with the career choices.
